Establishing Foundations: The Voice of God

One of the hardest things for many Christians is how do you hear God's voice for yourself? We are accustomed to the natural way of speaking. God never speaks to your mind but to your spirit, revealing Spirit to spirit. (1 Cor. 2:14) God's voice never contradicts His word. The more you know the Word, the more you will understand what the voice of God might say. When we read the Bible and it does not make sense, it is because we are trying to understand God naturally, with the mind. Then one day something leaps off the page at you. The revelation came when God spoke to your spirit and it was revealed to you. God actual spoke to you!

The next step is taking this into the area of conversations with God. Since you are a spirit, and God is going to speak to your spirit, you need to exercise two things. The first is the language of the spirit, or praying in tongues. The more you pray, the more your spirit comes into tune spiritually. This gets you in the right place for the second thing, to listen with your spirit. (Luke 8:15) Your spirit will always know more than your mind. Many times we see missed opportunities, that we know we should have done something. Instead of looking at these as failures, look at these and say, what was said? How did I respond? What was going on inside of me? Was it my head or from somewhere else? You can use missed opportunities to grow into hearing the voice of God.

Many people think they are not hearing correctly because of insecurity, fear of failure, shame, or rejection. Most of the time our hearts help hold us in "check" and we really are hearing correctly, but we need to deal with these areas, as they are what is really holding us back. Sometimes we do not step out because we think we will go against the word or "it might not be right". This comes because we have not spent time in the Word and have no confidence. (John 10:4)

We are following the voice of God everyday. His Spirit is leading us, not into unholy acts, but into righteousness. (John 16:13) This is an act of spiritually hearing, without conscious thought. Hearing the voice and letting it grow bigger only comes over time and yieldedness. (John 12:47-50) Ask these three questions. Is this voice from my mind? (Emotional response, man's knowledge, etc.) is this voice from the devil? (Contradicting God's Word, lying, leading into error, etc.) Is this voice from God? (Revealing truth, speaks the Word, is not destructive) God is always speaking to us. We may just need to take time out to listen. Proverbs 8:34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
