Establishing Foundations: Worship
Worship is not actions but attitude of the heart. It is not something we do, but something we are. John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. You see what the Father is looking for and seeking after is not worship, but the worshipper. He gives the description of what a worshipper is, spirit and truth. This is talking about the heart and realization of who God is. Our worship is not based on whether we have had a good day, or week, but on one fact alone, that God almighty is worthy to be worshipped. His worthiness has not changed. His greatness is still the same. This is the truth that this verse in John is truly talking about.
You see, worship begins and occurs at any moment of the day. You can worship God without music, etc. Worship begins when we gather, at the moment we enter the church on Sunday, not when the music starts. Prayer, reading scripture, preaching, teaching, are all acts of paying homage and worship for who God is. When we start the musical part of a service, it is now a physical expression of our love for the Lord. This expression of worship takes on many different aspects. We lift hands, dance, sing, play instruments, clap, wave flags and banners, etc. This time of outward expression is precious in the sight of God. His children are enjoying Him! Because of this, we need to limit our talking with each other and keep distractions to a minimum.
The ultimate goal is to sing a new song unto the Lord out of our spirit. For many, this is difficult to follow, but if you get in the spirit, your spirit can follow along. This prophetic singing is something every believer can do. This is when our spirit now expresses itself to God, as the Holy Spirit leads us. This is coupling the truth (our natural actions and understanding) with the Spirit. This truly is worshipping in Spirit and Truth. We become those whom the Father would seek.
